Clinical Causes: A direct lightning strike affecting an individual outdoors or indoors. Being in close proximity to a lightning strike where electrical energy travels through the ground or objects and affects a person. Contact with conductive materials that are struck by lightning and transmit the electrical current. Standing in open areas during a thunderstorm without adequate shelter. Touching metal objects or structures that are struck by lightning.

Key Symptoms: Burns at entry and exit points where the lightning contact occurred. Loss of consciousness or fainting episodes. Cardiac arrhythmias such as irregular heartbeat. Difficulty breathing or respiratory distress. Neurological symptoms including confusion, dizziness, or seizures. Muscle pains, weakness, or paralysis. Skin sensations like tingling or a feeling of electrical shocks. Swelling and tissue damage from burn injuries.

Diagnosis Path: Electrocardiogram (ECG) to detect heart rhythm disturbances. Blood tests to assess organ function and presence of muscle injury. Imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI if structural injuries are suspected. Assessment for burns, neurological damage, or other trauma related to lightning strike.

Treatment Protocols: Airway management, ensuring proper breathing and oxygenation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if necessary, especially in cases of cardiac arrest. Control of burns and articulation of wound care for burn injuries. Monitoring and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias with medications or other interventions. Neurological assessment and supportive therapy for neurological symptoms. Intravenous fluids to maintain blood pressure and support organ function. Hospital admission for continuous monitoring and additional interventions as needed. Psychological support or counseling if trauma impacts mental health.
