Key Symptoms: Severe pain and burning sensation in the eye. Redness and swelling of the eyelids and conjunctiva. Blurred vision or decreased visual acuity. Presence of chemical residues or debris on the eye surface. Sensitivity to light (photophobia). Tearing and increased tear production. Potential loss of eyelashes or damage to eyelid tissues. Persistent tearing or discharge from the eye. Corneal opacity or ulceration in severe cases.

Diagnosis Path: Diagnosis involves a comprehensive eye examination, including visual acuity assessment and slit-lamp examination to evaluate tissue damage. The healthcare provider will review the patient’s exposure history and might perform additional tests such as fluorescein staining to identify corneal injuries. Imaging studies are rarely necessary but may be used to assess the extent of tissue damage or foreign bodies.

Treatment Protocols: Immediate irrigation of the eye with sterile saline or water to dilute and remove the corrosive substance. Use of topical anesthetics to facilitate examination and reduce discomfort. Application of antibiotics to prevent secondary infection. Use of topical steroids in select cases to reduce inflammation unless contraindicated. Analgesics for pain management. Monitoring for corneal injuries, such as ulcers or perforations.
