Clinical Causes: Infection with the herpes simplex virus, predominantly HSV-2 but sometimes HSV-1. Close contact with an infected person during sexual activity, including vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Presence of active sores or outbreaks in the genital area of an infected individual. Asymptomatic shedding, where the virus is active without visible symptoms, can also transmit the infection.

Key Symptoms: Small blisters or sores on the shaft of the penis or around the genital area. Pain, itching, or tingling sensation in the affected area before sores appear. Ulceration or open sores that may be painful and take several days to heal. Swelling or redness around the penis. Discomfort during urination if sores are present near the urethra. Recurrent outbreaks with similar but often less severe symptoms over time.

Diagnosis Path: Visual examination of the penile sores or blisters. Swab test from an active sore to detect the herpes simplex virus via PCR or culture. Blood tests to identify herpes antibodies, indicating past or recent infection. Serologic testing if clinical signs are not evident but exposure is suspected.

Treatment Protocols: Antiviral medications such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir, prescribed by a healthcare provider. Suppression therapy with daily antiviral medication for frequent outbreaks. Applying topical anesthetics or soothing creams to alleviate discomfort. Maintaining good personal hygiene and keeping the affected area clean and dry. Using condoms consistently during sexual activity to reduce transmission risk. Open communication with sexual partners about herpes status to promote safe sexual practices.
