Clinical Causes: Intentional self-harm, often associated with underlying mental health issues such as depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Misuse or overdose of prescribed neuroleptic medications, either intentionally or accidentally. Poor understanding of medication risks, leading to intentional overdose attempts. Psychological distress or crisis, prompting deliberate ingestion of toxic doses of neuroleptics. Lack of access to mental health support or effective therapy, increasing the risk of self-harm behaviors.

Key Symptoms: Altered mental state such as confusion, drowsiness, or sedation. Extrapyramidal symptoms, including tremors or involuntary movements. Hypotension, leading to dizziness or fainting. Respiratory depression, which can cause difficulty breathing. Nausea and vomiting. Seizures in severe cases. Loss of consciousness or coma in extreme poisoning. Cardiac arrhythmias, which can be life-threatening. Dry mouth and blurred vision.

Diagnosis Path: Blood tests to identify elevated levels of neuroleptics or other toxic substances. Electrocardiograms (ECG) to detect heart rhythm disturbances. Assessment of vital signs and neurological status. Additional tests based on presenting symptoms, such as chest X-ray or brain imaging.

Treatment Protocols: Monitoring and stabilization of vital signs, including airway, breathing, and circulation. Use of activated charcoal if the ingestion was recent, to limit absorption of the toxins. Administration of intravenous fluids to manage hypotension and dehydration. Medications to reverse or counteract specific symptoms, such as medications for seizures or arrhythmias. Sedation or management of extrapyramidal symptoms with appropriate drugs. Psychological support and mental health intervention to address underlying issues that led to self-harm.
