Diagnosis Path: Diagnosis involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and laboratory testing. Sample collection from the site of infection—such as swabs from the affected area—allows for microscopic evaluation or laboratory cultures to identify Trichomonas parasites. Additional tests may include nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), which are highly sensitive and specific.

Treatment Protocols: Trichomoniasis can usually be effectively treated with antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare provider. The most common treatment involves a single dose of oral metronidazole or tinidazole. It is important that all sexual partners are treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection. During treatment, patients are advised to avoid sexual activity and follow healthcare provider instructions. Follow-up testing may be recommended to ensure the infection has been fully cleared.
